Cotswold Lib Dems back Martin Surl for Police and Crime Commissioner

Today, Cllr Paul Hodgkinson, Gloucestershire County Councillor for Bourton & Northleach, Cllr Joe Harris, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on CDC, and Cllr Mark Harris, Mayor of Cirencester, issued the following joint statement about the PCC election on May 5:

‘As a Party locally we have decided not to field a candidate for the role of Police and Crime Commissioner. We feel this role should not be politicised and are therefore backing the current Commissioner Martin Surl.

'Martin is an Independent candidate and therefore not swayed by party politics in this crucial role. He is a Cotswolds resident and knows our area well. We applaud his decision to make road safety a key part of this approach in the last 3 years and ask him to concentrate on this if he is re-elected in May as it is very important to people in the Cotswolds.

'Continuity is this new role will be of benefit to all of us. We also ask him to ensure our PCSO’s continue to have a high profile on our streets and in our villages. The local face of policing is vital.’
