Internet film uncovers CCTV blindfold

10.11.01am GMT Mon 4th Jan 2010

A secret decision to 'blindfold' Cirencester's CCTV monitoring has come under increased fire after new attacks in the town.

The ruling Conservative Party on Cotswold District Council's decision to cut the hours by half only came to light after a victim of a vicious attack used the Freedom of Information Act to expose the behind closed doors decision. Now, other incidents on the streets of Cirencester have followed. A young man was attacked last month and his attacker may be caught on CCTV footage after the event.

Lib Dem leader on CDC, Paul Hodgkinson, has now taken the campaign to the internet with a film message that reflects the public's concern.

"CDC's Cabinet appears to like secrecy, taking massive decisions in private. This film shows them that they should be open," said Cllr Hodgkinson (Churn Valley). "I'm happy for my views to be public and I challenge them to do likewise."

"Most people have been incensed by their actions."

The video, filmed on the streets of Cirencester, airs the mounting concern about the CDC Cabinet's secret actions. In it, Cllr Hodgkinson vox pops local residents. One of the people interviewed says, "It's logical that the cameras should be manned 24 hours a day. Since I moved to the town there's been more violence. Our money has been spent on CCTV and it's very important that it's used."

Another resident speaks of one of the recent attacks in the town, "I'm aware of a violent incident and they're hoping CCTV will help solve the case. We have absolutely the right to be aware of whether monitoring is increased or decreased."
