Thumbs up for Catalpa's new trees8.54.19am GMT Mon 9th Nov 2009
Catalpa Square's tree stumps are being replaced next week and it's been welcomed by the councillors who suggested it. New pear trees are to be planted between 15 and 18 November after the stumps have been removed, thanks to a new council policy proposed by Lib Dem councillors. Lib Dem leader on CDC, Cllr Paul Hodgkinson (Churn Valley), is delighted that something positive is at last happening in the Square, "The felling of the catalpa trees in Cirencester earlier this year by Cotswold District Council without reference to the Town Council or residents of the town left many people furious." "We presented a motion to the Council asking that, in future, any trees cut down should be replaced as soon as possible, near to the original spot. We also asked for proper information and consultation to take place with town and parish councils if tree work is going to be undertaken by CDC. This has now been approved as council policy." Town and District Councillor Deryck Nash (Chesterton) added, "The square became an eyesore and it left many people sad, angry and confused. Now the area can have a fresh start with new trees which will give the place a much more pleasant feel." "Consultation with the local community often reveals things which may have been overlooked and is essential. Whether we cut down a tree or not shouldn't just be governed by spending priorities but by care for the environment."
