600 Plastics Recycling Petitioners spurned by Cotswold District Council

3.23.26pm BST (GMT +0100) Sat 20th Jun 2009

Nearly 600 Cotswold residents had petitioned Cotswold District and Gloucestershire County Councils to introduce a doorstep collection of all plastic bottles, plastic containers and plastic packaging. The petition was rejected by Cotswold District Council on cost grounds in spite of 55% of residents wanting such a service. CDC claimed it was difficult to find a processor that will take all types of plastic.

Cllr Hodgkinson (LibDem) criticised the decision after the meeting saying: "It's all about negotiating a really good rate with the waste contractor".

"I have come across Councils which have more frequent waste service than CDC's, including doorstep plastic recycling, which cost less per tonne than CDC's.

"There are councils all over the country who have found re-processors and more are coming on stream all the time. Where there's a will, there's a way."
