The truth about waste11.00.00am GMT Fri 22nd Aug 2008
There's been much rubbish spoken in letters to the local press about what the Lib Dems think about CDC's new waste service. For the record, this is where we stand: 1. We're passionate about recycling but doing it in partnership with taxpayers, not by snooping, putting microchips in bins or imposing a £30 stealth tax for green waste. Only the Lib Dems on CDC voted against this and warned against imposing a tax on recycling. 2. We welcome cardboard recycling on the doorstep but we want plastics included, which many of you have told us you want too. Other councils we've looked at operate this system at a fraction of the cost CDC claims it would be. 3. We called for an open enquiry into the fiasco of delays to the new waste service - including why no penalty clauses were included in the agreement with the bin supplier who couldn't deliver on time. The Conservative Cabinet at CDC voted 8-0 not even to review what had gone on. We just want an efficient, value for money waste system which is well managed and a Council which is willing to be honest and learn from problems. Do you agree with us?
