“You deserve better!” - that’s the call from local Liberal Democrats as they launch their bid to take control of Cotswold District Council in the local elections on May 2nd.

Their manifesto named ‘Good, better, best - A Liberal Democrat plan for the Cotswolds’ outlines key priorities including solving the housing crisis, responding to the decline in the high street and tackling rural and social isolation.

The Conservatives have run Cotswold District Council for 16 years and the Liberal Democrats have been the main opposition in that time and need six gains in order to secure a majority.

The party are also standing more women, more young people and more under-represented groups that any other party.

Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Cotswold District Council, Joe Harris said: “The Cotswold Liberal Democrats have a record of action, a plan for our area and a diverse and energetic team that will drive positive change in our District.

“The Cotswolds is a good place to live, work and visit but beneath the generally shiny surface there are big issues facing our area and we need leadership to solve them. We will prioritise building social rented housing for local families and young people rather than executive homes, we want to help tackle social isolation by improving access to community facilities, employment and training by improving public transport and we also will put tackling climate change at the heart of everything the council does.

“The Conservatives have run Cotswold District Council now for 16 years and taken residents for granted. In that time we’ve seen a housing policy that favours big developers allowing them to make millions in profit, just look at the large Chesterton development on the edge of Cirencester. In many towns and villages nothing has been done to tackle parking problems and they’ve also allowed planning to spiral out of control by not putting a ‘local plan’ in place in a timely manner. We believe that residents in the Cotswolds deserve better.

“Local elections in our area are always close between the Lib Dems and Conservatives and this election will be no different. Whilst Labour and UKIP try to push their national agenda at a local level only the Liberal Democrats offer real change.”
